Schalke was knocked out in injury time

Schalke was knocked out in Wolfsburg by a goal from Daniel Ginczek (94.), less than ten minutes after Nabil Bentaleb had apparently secured a point for the “knappen” (85.). This penalty kick had been caused by John Anthony Brooks, who had already brought the “wolves” into the lead in the 33rd minute.

Beside this turbulent play process also the video proof provided again for discussion material – and within three minutes even twice. In the case of the Schalk defender Matija Nastasic, referee Patrick Ittrich took out the yellow card after a gross foul, before he took the Serbs off the field with red after studying the video pictures (66th).

Wolfsburg’s Wout Weghorst was the exact opposite shortly afterwards. First the Dutchman saw the red card because of an alleged assault against Burgstaller. After Ittrich had checked his decision again, however, the striker got just like Burgstaller only yellow and was allowed to continue playing (69.).

Mönchengladbach defeats Leverkusen

Borussia Mönchengladbach celebrated a tailor-made start to the season with a deserved victory in the Rhein-Derby against Bayer Leverkusen. In the 94th duel since its premiere in 1952, Borussia won 2:0 (0:0) in front of 53,087 spectators on Saturday and thus returned the favour for last year’s 1:5 clap. Jonas Hofmann, who scored a penalty in the 55th minute, and Fabian Johnson (58th) scored the goals for Mönchengladbach. Before the break, Thorgan Hazard (38) had failed with a penalty kick to Bayer goalkeeper Ramazan Özcan.
